For over two decades, Rafael Luna — known simply to many as Raf — has been a fierce and fluid force in the world of creative music. An award-winning flutist, improviser, composer, and true artistic shapeshifter, Raf has spent his career performing at world-renowned stages like Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall, recording at legendary studios like Capitol Records and Sony Entertainment Studios, and collaborating with some of the industry’s finest, from Bennie Maupin to Michael Skloff and Heitor Pereira.

But Raf’s story isn’t just about accolades. It’s about humanity. About connection.
It’s about an artist who holds deep respect for tradition while refusing to be shackled by it — using innovation not as rebellion, but as a natural extension of honoring the past.

Rooted in a multidisciplinary spirit, Raf believes in the magic of cross-collaboration — blending music, art, and community wherever possible. Whether leading ensembles like Tripod Boom and The Raf Collective, teaching musicians of all ages, or building platforms for creative expression, Raf embodies the rare artist who is both a master of the craft and a real, grounded human being.

What’s next?

Raf is leading a fundraising event for his East Bay band students, happening April 27th at The Catalyst in Stockton, CA. With his ensemble The Raf Collective, he’ll be performing original works and reinvented jazz classics — setting the tone for a year focused on recording, performing, and reconnecting with audiences in new ways.

Beyond the stage, Raf is preparing to dive even deeper: planning to pursue a doctorate in music or educational leadership, and ultimately crafting workshops that bring performance, education, and creative healing directly into schools and communities.
